Norwood Memorial Airport manager Russ Maguire is urging that a plan be put in place soon to keep control towers like the one in Norwood open beyond Sept. 30. “As was evident earlier this year when the FAA announced its intention to close its contract towers, any uncertainty over funding will most likely create significant safety and operational concerns in our community, and, within the flying public,” wrote Maguire in a letter to US Senator Elizabeth Warren, with copies sent to Senator Edward Markey, US Representative Stephen Lynch, and state and local officials. Contract towers are control towers staffed by non-FAA employees. Cutbacks by the FAA were announced this year as part of the budget-cutting sequestration, but the airports later were allowed to continue operations, at least through the end of the fiscal year ending Sept. 30.
